How to use

  1. Enter the first fraction: 3/4, 1 1/2 or 0.75.
  2. Choose the operation and enter the second fraction.
  3. Read the reduced answer, the mixed number, the decimal and the percentage.

Good to know

The answer is always reduced, because that is the answer expected

Adding 1/6 and 1/3 gives 3/6 on the way, but a teacher, a recipe and a tape measure all want 1/2. The calculator divides numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor before showing anything, so the fraction comes out in its shortest form and the mixed number next to it stays honest — 7/2 is shown as 3 1/2, not as 3.5.

Counted in whole numbers, not in decimals

A tenth cannot be written exactly in binary, so 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 through decimal arithmetic gives 0.999… and long chains drift further. Here numerators and denominators stay whole numbers of unlimited length, and the result is exact — the decimal form is produced at the very end, only for reading.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a mixed number?

With a space: «1 1/2» means one and a half. A minus in front applies to the whole thing, so «-1 1/2» is minus three halves, not minus one plus a half.

Can I mix decimals and fractions?

Yes. «0.75» and «3/4» are the same number to the calculator, and you can write one in the first field and the other in the second. A comma works as a decimal point too.

What happens when I divide by zero?

Nothing is shown except a note that division by zero has no answer. A calculator that prints «Infinity» there is only pretending to have computed something.
