In the United States 15–20% is expected in restaurants and often not included in the bill. In much of Europe service is already added and rounding up is enough. In Japan and South Korea a tip can be refused outright. When in doubt, look for «service» on the bill before adding anything.

Calculate the total with the tip and divide by the number of people — that keeps the tip proportional. Splitting the bill first and adding a tip to each share gives the same result only when everyone tips the same percentage.
