VAT Calculator

Adding tax is a multiplication; removing it is a division, and that is where most mistakes happen. Both directions are here, each on its own tab.

How to use

  1. To add VAT: keep this tab, enter the net amount and the rate.
  2. To take VAT out: switch to «Take a tax out», enter the amount with tax and the rate — the price without tax and the tax itself appear together.
  3. The sentence under the result shows which numbers produced it.

Good to know

Removing tax is not subtracting the same percentage

If a price includes 20% VAT, the net amount is not «price minus 20%». The tax was added to the smaller number, so you divide: 1200 ÷ 1.2 = 1000, while subtracting 20% would give 960 — a 40-unit error on every invoice.

Rates change, arithmetic does not

The standard rate is 20% in the UK and France, 19% in Germany, 21% in Spain and the Netherlands, 22% in Italy, 23% in Poland. Reduced rates for food, books and medicine differ by country, so take the rate from the invoice rather than from memory.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Enter the net amount and the rate on this tab: the result is the price with tax.

How do I calculate the price without VAT?

On the «Take a tax out» tab: enter the amount that already includes VAT and the rate. No arithmetic in your head — you do not have to turn 20% into 120 yourself.

How do I get the tax amount alone?

The «Take a tax out» tab shows it right under the answer: the price without tax comes first, the tax itself follows in the same line.

Are my figures sent anywhere?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser, so invoices and salaries stay on your device.
