Good to know
How words are counted
Where the browser supports it, the tool uses Intl.Segmenter, the same word-boundary algorithm browsers use for text selection. That means Chinese and Japanese, which have no spaces between words, are segmented properly instead of being counted as one enormous word.
Characters with and without spaces
Publishers and translation agencies usually price by characters without spaces, while social networks and meta tags count everything. Both numbers are shown so you do not have to guess which one the limit refers to.
Reading time
The estimate assumes about 200 words per minute, which is typical for adults reading non-fiction on screen. Technical text with code or formulas is slower, so treat the figure as a floor rather than a promise.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text I paste stored anywhere?
No. The counting happens in your browser and the text is never sent anywhere — you can paste a draft or an NDA-covered document safely.
How is reading time calculated?
Word count divided by 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute.
Does it count words in Chinese or Japanese?
Yes. Browsers that support Intl.Segmenter segment CJK text by real word boundaries; otherwise the tool falls back to splitting on whitespace.
How are sentences counted?
By terminal punctuation — full stops, question and exclamation marks, including the CJK forms 。!?. Abbreviations such as "e.g." can inflate the number slightly.
What counts as a paragraph?
A block of text separated from the next by at least one blank line.
Is there a length limit?
No hard limit. Counters stay smooth well past the length of a typical article or thesis chapter.
Can it count lines, not just words?
Yes — «Lines» sits next to paragraphs and updates as you type, which is what you need when the field holds a list rather than prose. A line break at the very end does not add an empty line, so a list of ten items counts as ten.
