Line Tools

Paste a list — one item per line — and choose what to do with it. Everything runs in the browser, so even ten thousand rows never leave your computer.

How to use

 1. Paste your list into the left field, one item per line.
 2. Pick an operation: duplicates, sorting, numbering, line ↔ column, columns or stripping HTML.
 3. Copy the result or save it as a text file.

Good to know

Sorting follows the language, not the character table

Sorted by character codes, «Zebra» comes before «apple» and «Ёлка» lands after «Яблоко» — capital letters and non-Latin alphabets simply sit in different parts of the table. Here the list is sorted by the rules of the page language, and numbers are compared as numbers, so «item 9» stays ahead of «item 10» instead of squeezing between «1» and «2».

Stripping tags is not a hunt for angle brackets

A «>» lives legitimately inside an attribute value, so cutting out everything between «<» and «>» tears that markup apart and leaves scraps of code in the text. This tool reads the markup character by character: comments disappear, the contents of script and style go with them, block tags become line breaks, and entities such as & turn back into characters.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing duplicates keep the original order?

Yes. The first occurrence stays where it was and only the later copies go. Spaces at the edges are ignored during comparison, so «Moscow» and «Moscow » count as one item — which is what anyone cleaning up a list expects.

How are the columns filled?

Top to bottom, like a newspaper: the first half of the list goes into the first column, the second half into the second. An alphabetical list stays alphabetical inside each column, which is not true when items are dealt out one by one.

Is there a limit on the size of the list?

No. The work happens in your browser, nothing is uploaded anywhere, and a list of tens of thousands of lines is processed in a fraction of a second.
