Online Notepad

A place to put a thought before it gets away: a draft reply, a phone number, a list for the shop. The text saves itself as you type and is still here the next time you open the page.

The text lives in this browser only: not on our server, not in an account, and not on your other devices. Clearing site data erases it — download the file if it matters.

How to use

  1. Start typing — the note saves itself a moment after you stop.
  2. Come back to this page from the same browser and the text is where you left it.
  3. Download the note as a .txt file or copy it out whenever you need it elsewhere.

Good to know

Where the text actually lives

In this browser, on this device, and nowhere else. There is no account here and nothing is uploaded, so the note cannot appear on your phone if you wrote it on a laptop — and equally, nobody here can read it. The other side of that deal is worth knowing: clearing site data, using a private window, or a browser that wipes storage on exit will take the note with it. If the text matters, download the file.

Two tabs, one note

Open the pad in two tabs and both are writing to the same place. Naive saving lets the last tab to hit the disk win, which is how yesterday's version overwrites today's work. Here the newer text wins by its timestamp, and a tab you are actively typing in is never overwritten under your hands — it tells you the other tab has changed something instead.

Counters while you write

Words, characters, lines and reading time update as you type, using the same rules as our character counter, so the two pages never disagree. Reading time assumes 200 words a minute — the usual pace for reading to yourself, not aloud.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. It stays in this browser's local storage. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account, and there is no copy on our server to hand over or lose.

Will the note survive closing the tab?

Yes — closing the tab, closing the browser and restarting the computer all leave it intact. What removes it is clearing site data or browsing history with 'cookies and site data' ticked, and a private window, which forgets everything on close.

Can I open the same note on my phone?

No. Storage belongs to one browser on one device, and there is no account to sync through. Download the .txt and send it to yourself if you need it elsewhere.

How much text fits?

Around half a million characters — roughly three hundred pages. Past that the page says so and stops saving, because browser storage is a few megabytes for the whole site, not a filing cabinet.

Can I use bold or headings?

No, and that is the point: this is plain text, so it pastes cleanly into anything — an email, a code editor, a form — without dragging invisible formatting along.
