The limits worth remembering

A page title is cut around 60 characters, a meta description around 160, a post on X allows 280, an Instagram caption 2 200, and an SMS switches to a second message after 160 Latin characters — or after 70 as soon as one emoji or Cyrillic letter appears.

Why an emoji can count as two

Counting is done over real characters rather than bytes, so «é» is one and not two. But an emoji built from several code points — a flag, a family, a skin tone — is one visible symbol made of parts, and some platforms bill it accordingly.

Does the count include spaces?

Both numbers are shown: with spaces and without, so you never have to guess which limit is meant.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens in your browser — a draft or an NDA-covered document is safe to paste.

Are line breaks counted?

In the number with spaces, yes: a line break is a character. In the number without spaces it is excluded together with spaces and tabs.

How does it count Chinese or Japanese?

Every hieroglyph is one character. Words are counted separately using the browser's own word-boundary algorithm.
