Hours Calculator
Fill in when each shift started and ended, subtract the break, and the week adds up as you type. The total is shown twice — as 40:30 and as 40.50 — because those two are what people mix up: eight and a half hours is 8.50, not 8.30.
Fill in when the shift started and ended. Overnight shifts are counted correctly — an end earlier than the start means the next morning.
Total for the week —

Pay for the week 0
Nothing leaves this tab: the week is kept in this browser so it survives a reload, and it is not sent to a server. The decimal figure is the one payroll systems usually ask for — 8:30 is 8.50 hours, not 8.30, and that difference is twelve minutes a shift.

How to use
- For each day, type the start and end of the shift. «9:00», «9», «0900» and «5 pm» are all understood.
- Put unpaid breaks in the third field, in minutes. They are taken off that day's total.
- The week adds up automatically. Anything over the overtime threshold is shown separately — the threshold is 40 hours by default and can be changed.
- Add an hourly rate to see the pay for the week. Overtime is paid at the same rate times the multiplier, 1.5 by default.
Good to know
8:30 is 8.50 hours, not 8.30
This is the most expensive confusion in a timesheet. Hours-and-minutes and decimal hours look almost the same, and payroll systems usually want the decimal form. Half an hour is 0.50, a quarter is 0.25, ten minutes is 0.17. Reading 8:30 as 8.30 loses twelve minutes on that shift alone, and about an hour over a month of shifts — small enough that nobody checks, large enough to matter. That is why both figures are always shown side by side here rather than one of them.
A night shift is not negative time
A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is eight hours. Subtracting the numbers gives minus sixteen; taking that as an absolute value gives sixteen, and both answers are wrong. When the end is earlier than the start, this calculator adds a day, which is what actually happened — the shift crossed midnight. It also means you never have to enter dates: for a week of shifts, the times alone carry all the information.
Overtime counts from the excess, not from the whole week
Fifty hours at a forty-hour threshold means forty regular and ten overtime, not fifty paid at the higher rate. The threshold itself is a setting rather than a constant: forty hours a week is the American rule, and it is different elsewhere — thirty-five in France, forty-eight as the general European ceiling, and a great many jobs are on a salary where overtime is not counted at all. Set the threshold to zero and the split disappears.
Frequently asked questions
How should I type the time?
Whichever way you normally would. «9:00», «9», «09.30», «0930», «5 pm» and «17:30» are all read correctly. Twelve-hour notation works too, including the awkward pair — «12 am» is midnight and «12 pm» is noon.
Does it handle shifts that run past midnight?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is taken as crossing into the next day, so 22:00 to 06:00 counts as eight hours.
Are breaks paid or unpaid?
The minutes you enter as a break are taken off the day's total, so use the field for unpaid breaks only. If your lunch is paid, leave it at zero — it is already inside the shift.
Is my timesheet saved or sent anywhere?
It is kept in this browser so it survives a reload, and that is all. It is not sent to a server, not shared between devices and not visible to us. Clearing your site data removes it, and the page works with the network switched off.
Can I use this for an invoice or a payslip?
For working out the figure, yes — that is what it is for. Whether the result is what you should be paid is a separate question that depends on your contract and local law: breaks, rounding rules and overtime thresholds vary, and this calculator only does the arithmetic you give it.
