Audio Trimmer

A ringtone from a favourite chorus, one answer cut out of an hour-long interview, an intro trimmed off a recorded lecture. Pick the moments, listen to check, and take the piece — the file never leaves this device, and the sound is not re-encoded on the way.

By default the sound is copied, not re-encoded: trimming a song should not cost it quality. The cut lands on the nearest frame boundary — 26 milliseconds for MP3, which nobody hears. Everything happens in your browser; the file is not uploaded.

How to use

  1. Choose the audio file — MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, FLAC.
  2. Set the start and the end. The player above helps you find them by ear.
  3. Press the button and download the fragment.

Good to know

Why the sound is copied, not re-encoded

Re-encoding a track to cut ten seconds out of it costs quality for nothing: MP3 loses a little every time it is written again. So by default the stream is copied as it is. The price is that the cut lands on the nearest frame boundary — 26 milliseconds for MP3, 23 for AAC. Nobody hears that. If you do need the cut to the exact millisecond, there is a checkbox, and it says plainly that the file will be re-encoded.

What happens to the cover art

A picture inside an MP3 is technically a video stream of one frame, and copying it along with the sound confuses players: some show the fragment as being hours long. So the cover is dropped and the tags go with it. If the artwork matters, add it back in your player after trimming.

Frequently asked questions

Is my file uploaded?

No. The engine that does the cutting is downloaded into the browser once and works there; the audio stays on your device.

Will the quality drop?

Not by default: the sound is copied as it is. It drops only if you tick “cut exactly”, which re-encodes the fragment to MP3 — and the page says so next to the box.

What formats can I trim?

MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, OGG, Opus, FLAC. The fragment keeps the format of the original, unless you asked for an exact cut.

Why is the piece a few hundredths off?

Because copying without re-encoding can only cut on frame boundaries. For a ringtone that is invisible; for exact editing, use the checkbox.
