    Why this is fast when video conversion is not

    Video is expensive because every frame has to be decoded and encoded again — thousands of images for a few minutes of footage. Sound is a single thin stream beside them. Taking it out means ignoring the pictures entirely, which is why a five-minute clip finishes in about two seconds while re-encoding the same clip would take the better part of a minute.

    The engine loads once, then it is yours

    The first extraction pulls in a 30 MB conversion engine — the same one that runs on servers, compiled to run in a browser. That is a real wait on a slow connection, and we would rather say so than hide it. It is cached afterwards, so the second and tenth file cost nothing extra.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is my video uploaded anywhere?

    No. The conversion engine runs inside your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server — which also means a private recording stays private.

    Which quality should I pick?

    192 kbps is the sensible default. For speech — a lecture, a podcast, an interview — 128 kbps sounds the same and halves the file. Pick 320 kbps only for music you care about.

    Which video formats work?

    MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI and most things a phone or camera produces. If a file refuses to load, it is usually an unusual codec rather than the container.

    How large a file can I use?

    Up to 300 MB. A phone browser runs out of memory beyond that, and we would rather set a clear limit than let the tab die mid-way.

    Can I get just part of the soundtrack?

    Trim the video first and then extract — cutting is nearly instant, so the two steps together are still quick.
