    Why this one is quick when video is not

    Sound has no frames to redraw. A three-minute track is a few million samples, and re-encoding them is a matter of seconds even on a single thread — the same engine that needs minutes for a minute of video finishes an album track before you have read this paragraph. That is why the audio page has no time estimate and the video page does: here there is nothing to warn about.

    Which format to pick, and where the bitrate stops mattering

    MP3 plays on everything that has ever had a headphone jack, and 192 kbps is the point past which most people stop hearing a difference on most equipment. WAV is not compressed at all: it is what editing software and voice work want, and it is roughly ten times the size — which is why the bitrate control disappears when you choose it, because there is nothing for it to control. OGG with Vorbis is smaller than MP3 at the same quality and is what open software and game engines prefer.

    Is my recording uploaded anywhere?

    No. The conversion happens inside your browser, on your device. Voice recordings — interviews, notes, a message someone sent you — are among the things people least want sitting on a stranger’s server, and here there is nothing to sit.

    Can I pull the sound out of a video here?

    Not on this page — it takes audio in. The video-to-MP3 page does exactly that, and it does it without re-encoding what does not need re-encoding.

    Why did the bitrate control disappear?

    Because you picked WAV, which stores sound uncompressed. A bitrate setting there would be a knob that turns nothing, and showing one would be a small lie about what the tool does.

    Converting MP3 to MP3 at a higher bitrate — will it sound better?

    No. What a lossy format threw away is gone; encoding it again at 320 kbps only makes a larger file holding the same loss. Going up in bitrate helps only when the source is WAV, FLAC or another format that kept everything.
