    Which format to pick

    JPG for photographs: it is small and every program opens it, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail each time it is saved. PNG keeps transparency and every pixel exactly, which makes it right for screenshots, logos and drawings — and heavy for photos. WebP is smaller than both at the same quality and is understood by every current browser, which is why sites use it.

    HEIC and other formats your browser can open

    Photos from an iPhone arrive as HEIC, which most desktop programs still refuse to open. Here they are decoded on your own device — with a WebAssembly decoder loaded only if the browser cannot manage on its own — and leave as an ordinary JPG. The same goes for AVIF, BMP and GIF.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are my images uploaded anywhere?

    No. The conversion happens inside your browser, on your device. That is what makes it safe to run a passport photo or a document scan through it.

    Why does WebP not work in my browser?

    It is always in the list, but an old browser may not be able to encode it. Then the file is not handed to you under a wrong name — you get a plain refusal and a suggestion to take JPG or PNG.

    Does converting make the file smaller?

    Often it does, but that is not what this tool is for. If the goal is a smaller file, compression has a page of its own, with a target size and a quality slider.

    How many files at once?

    Up to thirty, each up to 50 MB. They go through one after another so the tab does not run out of memory on a phone.
