Good to know
Why JPG and not PNG
JPG is the format everything opens, from a printing kiosk to a decade-old phone. It also stays small on photographs, because it throws away detail the eye barely notices. For a photo that is a good trade; for a logo with sharp edges it is not — there PNG serves you better.
Transparency has to become something
JPG cannot store transparency at all, so every see-through pixel needs a colour underneath. White is the usual answer and the default here, but if the picture will sit on a dark page, pick that shade instead — otherwise you get a bright halo around the edges.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The browser decodes and re-encodes them on your device; the files never leave it.
What quality should I choose?
Ninety percent is a safe default — the difference from the original is hard to see, and the file is several times smaller. Drop to seventy only when size matters more than detail.
Does animated WebP work?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG has no animation. For a moving image you need GIF or a video file.
How many files can I convert at once?
Up to thirty per batch. They are processed one after another so a phone does not run out of memory.
