    Why proportions matter more than they look

    A frame with a fixed ratio has one job: to keep that ratio no matter where you drag it. If it quietly changed shape when it hit the edge of the photo, «3:4» would stop being 3:4 exactly at the moment you pulled it into the corner — and you would find out at the printing counter. So at the edge the frame stops instead of stretching.

    Large photos are scaled down first

    A modern phone takes 48-megapixel pictures, and a browser cannot hold one on a canvas: the tab dies without an error. The picture is therefore fitted to a workable size before you see it, and the crop is taken from what is on screen — which is also what you were looking at when you chose it.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

    No. Decoding and cropping happen on your device, which is what makes it safe to crop a passport photo or a screenshot with private data.

    Which formats can I use?

    JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC from an iPhone, GIF, BMP and AVIF. A PNG stays a PNG; everything else comes back as JPG.

    Can I crop to an exact pixel size?

    The size of the frame is shown in pixels as you drag it, so you can hit the number you need. For an exact resize afterwards, use the image resizer.

    Why is the result smaller than my original?

    Because very large pictures are scaled down to fit a canvas. If you need the full resolution, crop in an editor on your computer — a browser cannot hold that much.
