Turn the camera on and you see yourself — that is the whole answer. Under the picture the page names the resolution and frame rate, and the microphone can be checked in the same go.

The picture stays in this tab: the stream is shown by the page itself and is not uploaded, recorded or stored. A photo is only saved if you press the button, and the camera light goes out as soon as you leave the page.

How to use

  1. Press «Turn the camera on» and allow access in the browser prompt.
  2. You should see yourself. Below the picture are the resolution and the frame rate the camera actually gives.
  3. If there are several cameras, switch between them in the list — on a phone that is the front and the back one.
  4. Tick «Check the microphone too» and the level bar appears under the picture, so a call is tested in one go.

The mirror is only on screen

The camera gives the frame as it is; the page flips it for display because people are used to seeing themselves in a mirror — without the flip your own movements feel like someone else's. The other side of a call sees you unflipped. A photo is saved exactly as shown, so the file matches the picture.

The resolution is what the camera gives, not what it can

The number under the picture is the mode the browser and the camera agreed on right now. A camera capable of 1080p may hand over 640 × 480 if another program holds it, if the light is poor, or if the driver decided so. That is why it is worth looking at: a call in 640 × 480 looks exactly as bad as it sounds.

Why the camera names are empty at first

Until you allow access, the browser hides the names of your devices — a list of hardware identifies a person almost as well as a name. Before permission the page shows «Camera 1», «Camera 2», and the real names appear right after you allow it.

Frequently asked questions

The picture is black, though the camera is on.

Usually the lens cover is closed, or another program holds the camera and gives out an empty frame. Check the physical shutter on the laptop first, then close calls and camera apps and press the button again.

The browser does not ask for permission at all.

It means access was already decided once. Open the padlock next to the address, set the camera to «Allow» and reload the page. On a phone the permission also lives in the system settings for the browser.

Why is the image mirrored?

Because we flip it for you. Every video call does the same: you see yourself as in a mirror, everyone else sees you the right way round. Untick «Mirror the picture» to see exactly what the other side sees.

Can I test the camera on a phone?

Yes, and both of them. Open the page, allow access and switch between the front and the back camera in the list. If the list has only one entry, the browser was given access to one camera only — that is set in the system permissions.

Is the video sent anywhere?

No. The stream is displayed by this page in your browser: it is not uploaded, not recorded and not stored. A photo appears only if you press the button, and the camera light goes out the moment you leave the page.
