Mic Test

Press the button, allow access and say something. The bar moves while the browser hears you — and the recording lets you hear how you actually sound to the other side.

The sound stays in this tab: the level and the recording are handled by the page itself, nothing is uploaded, and the recording is gone as soon as you leave.

How to use

  1. Press «Check the microphone» and allow access in the browser prompt.
  2. Say something out loud. The bar should move; the mark shows the loudest moment so far.
  3. Press «Record and listen» to hear yourself back — that is where noise, echo and the wrong microphone show up.
  4. If several microphones are listed, switch between them to find out which one the browser is actually using.

Good to know

The bar answers «does it hear me», the recording answers «how do I sound»

A moving bar only proves the browser receives something. It says nothing about hiss, echo or a microphone picking up the fan instead of your voice. That is why the page records a few seconds and plays them back: the other side of a call hears exactly this.

Why the microphone names are empty at first

Until you allow access, the browser hides the names of your devices — a list of hardware identifies a person almost as well as a name. Before permission the page shows «Microphone 1», «Microphone 2», and the real names appear right after you allow it.

Headphones, not speakers

Listen to the playback through headphones. Through speakers the microphone picks up its own playback, feeds it back in and everything starts to howl — that is feedback, not a broken microphone.

Frequently asked questions

The bar does not move at all. What is wrong?

Three usual causes, in order of likelihood: the wrong microphone is selected (switch it in the list), the input level is at zero in the system settings, or the microphone is muted by a hardware switch on the headset. If the bar stays flat on every device in the list, the problem is on the system side, not in the browser.

The browser does not ask for permission at all.

It means access was already decided once. Open the padlock next to the address, set the microphone to «Allow» and reload the page. On a phone the permission also lives in the system settings for the browser.

Why does it say the microphone is busy?

Some other program holds it — a call, a recorder, a conferencing app in the background. Windows and macOS usually let several programs share a microphone, but not always, and a call almost always takes it exclusively. Close it and press the button again.

Can I test the microphone of my headset?

Yes. Plug the headset in before opening the page, then pick it from the list. If it does not appear there, the system has not recognised it as a microphone — that is worth checking in the sound settings before blaming the browser.

Is my voice sent anywhere?

No. Both the level and the recording are processed by this page in your browser, and the recording is kept in memory only: it disappears as soon as you leave or reload. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.
