Change Photo Background

A portrait for a CV needs a white background, a product shot needs a clean one, a holiday photo needs a different sky. All of that is one action: separate the subject from what is behind it, then put something else there. The model that finds the subject is downloaded once and then works with the network off.

A photo of a person, an animal or an object. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, up to 30 MB

The picture stays on this device: it is not uploaded anywhere. The model is downloaded once and stays in the browser — after that the tool works with the network off.

The model here is a light one, four megabytes. It handles a clear subject on a distinct background well, and struggles with fine hair, fur and transparent edges — paid services run models forty times heavier on their own servers.

How to use

  1. Pick the photo — JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC.
  2. Press the button and wait a second or two while the subject is found.
  3. Choose what goes behind: nothing, a plain colour, or your own picture. Download the PNG.

Good to know

Your own picture as the background

The background is scaled to cover the frame and cropped by the edges, never stretched out of shape: a horizontal photo behind a vertical portrait keeps its proportions and loses its sides instead. Pick a background of roughly the same orientation and the crop will be barely noticeable.

Where the cut-out is honest and where it is not

A clear subject against a distinct background comes out clean. Fine hair, fur, glass and smoke do not: the model here is a light one, four megabytes, and it draws a firm edge where reality has a soft one. The page says out loud when the mask came out uncertain instead of quietly handing you a bad cut-out.

Frequently asked questions

Is the photo uploaded to a server?

No. The model runs in your browser; the picture and the background you choose never leave the device.

Can I use my own image as the background?

Yes — pick “My own picture” and choose a file. It is scaled to cover the frame and cropped by the edges, so nothing is distorted.

Why does the edge look rough on hair?

Because a light model draws a firm line where hair is semi-transparent. For portraits with loose hair a plain-coloured background hides the edge much better than a busy photo.

Which format comes out?

PNG — with transparency when you leave the background empty, and with the new background baked in when you choose one.
