Good to know

The numbers move while the test runs

The answer is read in chunks and counted as the bytes arrive, so the figure lives from the first moment instead of appearing at the end. The test stops by the clock, not by file size: about seven seconds each way. A fast line therefore gets a long enough sample to be accurate, and a weak one is never made to pull megabytes it cannot afford — whatever did not fit in the time is simply not sent.

A speed test measures a route, never a plan

The number you get is the throughput between your device and one specific server — ours, in the Netherlands. A closer server gives a higher number on the same line, and so does a test that runs many connections in parallel. That is why two speed tests disagree without either of them lying: they measured different things.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the result lower than my plan promises?

A plan is the speed to your provider's edge; the test is the speed to a server in another country. Wi-Fi, the distance to the server and the load on the route all take their share, and every one of them is real.

Why is upload so much slower than download?

Most home and mobile connections are deliberately asymmetric: the channel towards you is several times wider than the one away from you. That is the plan working as designed, not a fault.

Does the test use up my data allowance?

Yes — as much as fits into about seven seconds each way, and it cannot be otherwise: a speed test has to actually move data. On a slow connection that is a few hundred kilobytes; on fibre it is several megabytes.

Why does Wi-Fi give a different number from cable?

Because Wi-Fi is a shared radio channel with its own losses. If you are testing the internet rather than the flat, test over cable — and if you are testing the flat, walk around with the phone.
