The timer does not count ticks; it remembers the moment it should end and compares it with the clock. Browsers slow down background tabs to save battery, and a naive counter drifts by minutes over an hour. Here, switching tabs costs you nothing — the display catches up as soon as you return.

Twenty-five minutes and other habits

The presets are the intervals people actually use: 25 minutes for a work sprint, 5 for the break after it, 3 for tea, 45 for a lesson. Pressing one sets the time and starts it — the point of a preset is that you do not fill in a form first.

Frequently asked questions

Will it ring if I switch to another tab?

Yes, as long as the tab stays open. Browsers may delay the sound slightly in the background, but the elapsed time is measured against the clock and stays correct.

Why is there no sound at all?

Some browsers refuse to play audio until you have interacted with the page. Pressing «Start» counts as that interaction, so the beep works from the first run.

Does closing the tab stop the timer?

Yes. The countdown lives in the page — closing it or reloading starts over.

Can I use it as a stopwatch?

Yes, the second tab counts up instead of down, with tenths of a second.
